Roger C. Reale & Rue Morgue

When I first looked into reissuing Roger C. Reale’s 1978 Radioactive LP way back in 2004 I had no idea that there was an unreleased followup sitting on the shelf. Now I’m getting the opportunity to release both on Rave On records. Both albums fits in precisely with what was getting folks excited about rock and roll in 1979. If you love records from that era – think The Jam, Elvis Costello, Wreckless Eric, The Clash, Joe Jackson, Pretenders, etc., these albums album takes their place comfortably alongside those classics.

THE COLLECTION (CD/Digital) compiles 1978’s Radioactive LP with the previously unreleased 1979 follow-up, Reptiles In Motion. 24 tracks total.

Reptiles In Motion will also be available as a standalone vinyl release (the way it should have happened in ’79).

Pre-order info and release date soon.

Set List
The Sloppy Joes – Girl With the Light in Her Eyes
The Figgs – Powder King
Treeberrys – (Ah, Ah) Just Can’t Wait
The Milkshakes – Please Don’t Tell My Baby
Don Gardner – My Baby Likes To Boogaloo

Dusty Springfield – Just A Little Lovin’ (Early In The Mornin’)
XTC – Frivolous Tonight
The Beach Boys – Transcendental Meditation

Sloppy Joes 45 on Diesel Only is the first released recorded effort by Michael Shelley. Michael is still making fine music and continues to host his inspiring  radio show on WFMU.

Powder King released on 45 by The Figgs in 1993 predates the version they re-recorded for their Banda Macho LP three years. I leave you to decide which version is better, but what do you think I would spin? Produced by The Dictators’ Andy Shernoff.

Japan’s wonderful Treeberrys describe themselves as Garage Pop and that is perfect.

I’ve been listening to The Beach Boys Friends album a lot, and Transcendental Meditation is the albums’ closing track. It hit me some time ago that although the song and release predate (second time I’ve used predate in this blog post, now three) the existence of NRBQ, it’s a dead-ringer. Score one for Mike Love!

Set List
The Rattlers – On The Beach
The Tonettes – Teardrop Sea
David Bean – My Imagination
Mickey Jupp – You’ll Never Get Me Up In One Of Those
Danny Gatton Band – Love Is What You Need
Gerry & The Pacemakers – I’m The One
Mina – No Per Qualche Nota In Più
Dion – Drip Drop
Carl Perkins – Your True Love (Speed Corrected)
Splitsville – Tears Are Cool

I was a devoted fan of The Uncle Floyd Show in 1979 and The Rattlers pop up on show often. While I had no idea who The Rattlers were, I liked their songs, sound and energy. They ran a :30 TV spot advertising their On The Beach 45 and I picked it up as soon as I saw it in a record shop – likely my first record purchase of a “local band.” The Rattlers, of course,  were led by Mickey Leigh who has continued to produce interesting music and also wrote the very funny and very  moving “I Slept With Joey Ramone.”

Carl Perkins’ Your True Love is a favorite of mine, and in my view it’s one of the blueprints that The Beatles would use to construct early backup vocal style. You can’t miss it. As originally released, the track’s speed was increased, probably to make the song sound faster and Carl sound younger. It always made it sound like a Chipmunks record to me, so I’ve take the liberty of slowing the original track down to normal speed, because I care.

Set List
The Monkees – Porpoise Song
The Left Banke – Dark Is The Bark
Graham Gouldman – Bus Stop
The Bobby Fuller Four – The Magic Touch
Lyres – Someone Who’ll Treat You Right Now
Los Straitjackets – University Blvd.
Nick Lowe – She Don’t Love Nobody
The Wishniaks – Point Of No Return
Ramsey Lewis Trio – A Hard Day’s Night

Way back when I scored hundreds of 45s at a tag sale, but most of the records met a terrible fate at the hands of a my college mates when they discovered that vintage 45s make for explosive projectiles. This late-era Monkees track was one of the few survivors.

Lyres released “Someone Who’ll Treat You Right Now” as part of a 12″ EP followup to their 1985 LP Lyres On Fyre.  She Pays The Rent got most of the attention but these days this is my favorite. You’re listening to it here straight off the record, but I encourage all of you track down an original pressing (they’re not rare or terribly expensive)  – superb performance and recording.

The Wishniaks were a live staple of my years hanging out in New London, CT. and they often visited from their native Philadelphia to play the El ‘n’ Gee Club. This track comes from their independently released Nauseous and Cranky EP, and it just recently struck me how similar this sounds to mid-period Teenage Fanclub but a full few years before TF ever released a record or evolved to this kind of songwriting/performance.  Now The Wishniaks never got as slick or refined as TF, but you can hear something ahead of the curve happening here,  and we was there .  Go Indie Rock!

Radio RPB says, “They’re not oldies if they’re new to me.”

Set List
The Spirit – No Time To Rhyme
The Barracudas – Summer Fun
Chuck Berry – Come On
The Rolling Stones – She Said Yeah
Boys From Nowhere – Beg
The Continentals – Fizz Pop (Modern Rock)
Earl-Jean – I’m Into Something Good
Paul Westerberg -(Terry) Who You Gonna Marry?
Harmony Rockets – Skeleton Man
The Jive Five – What Time is It?
Tommy Keene – Faith In Love (Acoustic Version)

So many goodies in this episode, starting with New York City’s The Spirit from their 1967 single on Roulette.

The Barracudas scored a  1980 UK hit with their surf-inspired pop gem, Summer Fun. They preceded the song with a vintage radio advertisement for the Plymouth Barracuda. I was tempted to discard the advert for this episode, but it’s too much fun not to share.

Boston’s Boys From Nowhere made a big impression on me when I first heard this track on the Garage Sale cassette. The subsequently remixed and released as a single but the remix stole some of the homegrown charm. That original cassette version is what you hear here.

Epic Nu Disks appeared in 1980. 10″ EPs of bands of varying notoriety and quality. I tried to get them all. The Continentals got their own 10″ and promptly disappeared, but Fizz Pop stands as their anthem.

In 2008 Paul Westerberg released a single mp3 track containing an albums’ worth of untitled songs, song collages and and covers entitled 49:00. It was apparently met with some legal trouble and quickly removed from sale. We can only guess at song titles, but since I like parentheses I’m going to call this one “(Terry) Who You Gonna Marry?”

Tommy Keene left us last year and it stinks. Here’s a nice b-side off a promo single from his short-lived days on Geffen. Keene recorded Faith in Love in a full band version too, but I also think that was relegated to CD bonus track territory. This version is much sweeter.
