Job Description :

The Farm Assistant will be involved hourly in tending to livestock and horses, administering medications, maintaining the pastures, paddocks, pond, house and grounds, repairing and maintaining farm buildings, fences and machinery, and other ad hocfarm-related duties. Will advise the owner on the purchase of stock, feed and equipment, and perform repairs or remodeling. The farm assistant will be involved in feeding and watering animals. Previous experience taking care of livestock is preferred. Key Responsibilities:

- Help with some farm activities:

o Feed and water dogs, horses, sheep, cattle and cats.

o Schedule veterinary visits.

o Help with dog crate training and obedience training.

o Train horses.

o Feed and perform husbandry for poultry and rabbits

o Feed and perform husbandry and exercise horses.

- Daily care and husbandry of livestock including horses, cattle, chickens, rabbits, pigs, peacocks, dogs and any other species:

o Purchase animal stock and food

o Keep the animals fed, healthy, clean, and groomed.

o Herd cattle in the pastures.

o Exercise horses in paddocks

o Store quality straw and hay, and pine saw dust

o Perform animal breeding and raising procedures.

- Maintenance and upkeep of grounds, horse barn, avian coop and other animal holding structures and farm buildings:

o Contribute to cleaning the horse stalls and getting them ready for horses

o Contribute to cleaning the second floor of the stables

o Perform maintenance tasks such as painting

o Clear away animal waste, and keep the barn stalls, chicken coops, dog kennels, etc. tidy.

o Daily husbandry of horses and other animals.

o General maintenance, upkeep and remodeling of animal facilities.

o Ordering supplies and equipment as needed.

- Maintenance and upkeep of pastures, paddocks, and pond:

o Set up and operate irrigation equipment

o Seasonal activities including mowing and weeding (slashing and/or spraying), and snow plowing.

o Make sure the spring-fed pond is clean.

- Handyman skills:

o Maintain and repair farm buildings, fences, machinery, and other equipment.

o Ability to operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery and self-propelled machinery for plowing, fertilizing, spraying, etc.

- Personal requirements:

o Be invested in the farm lifestyle.

o Self-starter possessing great multi-tasking and problem-solving skills.

o Ability to undertake heavy manual labor.

o Ability to work long hours and in all kinds of weather conditions.

o Mechanical aptitude.

o Must demonstrate high standards of professionalism.

o Act in accordance with farm’s policies and in alignment with the farm’s culture.

Transition all the above activities to farm personnel before final separation.

Job Type: Part-time

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Floyd, VA 24091: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)

Experience:

  • Farming: 1 year (Preferred)
