Sloppy Joes 45 on Diesel Only is the first released recorded effort by Michael Shelley. Michael is still making fine music and continues to host his inspiring  radio show on WFMU.

Powder King released on 45 by The Figgs in 1993 predates the version they re-recorded for their Banda Macho LP three years. I leave you to decide which version is better, but what do you think I would spin? Produced by The Dictators’ Andy Shernoff.

Japan’s wonderful Treeberrys describe themselves as Garage Pop and that is perfect.

I’ve been listening to The Beach Boys Friends album a lot, and Transcendental Meditation is the albums’ closing track. It hit me some time ago that although the song and release predate (second time I’ve used predate in this blog post, now three) the existence of NRBQ, it’s a dead-ringer. Score one for Mike Love!

Set List
The Rattlers – On The Beach
The Tonettes – Teardrop Sea
David Bean – My Imagination
Mickey Jupp – You’ll Never Get Me Up In One Of Those
Danny Gatton Band – Love Is What You Need
Gerry & The Pacemakers – I’m The One
Mina – No Per Qualche Nota In Più
Dion – Drip Drop
Carl Perkins – Your True Love (Speed Corrected)
Splitsville – Tears Are Cool

I was a devoted fan of The Uncle Floyd Show in 1979 and The Rattlers pop up on show often. While I had no idea who The Rattlers were, I liked their songs, sound and energy. They ran a :30 TV spot advertising their On The Beach 45 and I picked it up as soon as I saw it in a record shop – likely my first record purchase of a “local band.” The Rattlers, of course,  were led by Mickey Leigh who has continued to produce interesting music and also wrote the very funny and very  moving “I Slept With Joey Ramone.”

Carl Perkins’ Your True Love is a favorite of mine, and in my view it’s one of the blueprints that The Beatles would use to construct early backup vocal style. You can’t miss it. As originally released, the track’s speed was increased, probably to make the song sound faster and Carl sound younger. It always made it sound like a Chipmunks record to me, so I’ve take the liberty of slowing the original track down to normal speed, because I care.
