Way back when I scored hundreds of 45s at a tag sale, but most of the records met a terrible fate at the hands of a my college mates when they discovered that vintage 45s make for explosive projectiles. This late-era Monkees track was one of the few survivors.
Lyres released “Someone Who’ll Treat You Right Now” as part of a 12″ EP followup to their 1985 LP Lyres On Fyre. She Pays The Rent got most of the attention but these days this is my favorite. You’re listening to it here straight off the record, but I encourage all of you track down an original pressing (they’re not rare or terribly expensive) – superb performance and recording.
The Wishniaks were a live staple of my years hanging out in New London, CT. and they often visited from their native Philadelphia to play the El ‘n’ Gee Club. This track comes from their independently released Nauseous and Cranky EP, and it just recently struck me how similar this sounds to mid-period Teenage Fanclub but a full few years before TF ever released a record or evolved to this kind of songwriting/performance. Now The Wishniaks never got as slick or refined as TF, but you can hear something ahead of the curve happening here, and we was there . Go Indie Rock!
